Ramos names who should replace Benzema at Real Madrid

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos has now named the player he believes would be a worthy successor to Karim Benzema at the Spanish giants.

The Frenchman was officially unveiled by his new employers Al Ittihad on Tuesday night, a move that put an end to his 14-year relationship with Los Blancos.

Real now find themselves without a top-class No. 9 or a back-up striker, with Mariano Diaz also confirmed to be leaving the club with the expiry of his contract this month.

According to reports in Spain, the Madrid outfit is scanning the market for a centre-forward, but are yet to decide what kind of player profile they are looking for.

It has been suggested that they are weighing up the option of signing a centre-forward who will be a short-term fix before the club tries to sign either Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland in 2024.

Another alternative is said to be splashing the cash on England and Tottenham Hotspur talisman Harry Kane, who is expected to cost around £100 million (R2.3 billion), while Kai Havertz of Chelsea is also reportedly on Real's radar, although he would not be a like-for-like replacement for Benzema.

However, Ramos, who himself recently left Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent and is tipped for a big move to Saudi Arabia, has now urged Kane to make the switch to Spain, insisting he would be a capable successor to the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"My advice to any player is don't turn down the opportunity to play for Real Madrid – it is a special club who know how to win," Ramos told the Daily Mirror.

"He [Kane] has an incredible physical presence, you can't score as many goals as he does in the Premier League and not be able to play the physical side of the game.

"But also he can play the technical side of the game as well and I don't think he gets enough credit for that.

"Yes, he is a great goal scorer, but also he is a great football player as well."

Ramos also stressed that whoever Benzema's successor is, he will need to be able to cope with the "pressure and expectation" of playing for Los Blancos.

"He [Benzema] has contributed to so much success with Real Madrid you will never be able to replace him – he is one of those players who is unique in the history of Madrid," the former Real captain added.

"What you do need to do, though, is bring in a quality forward who can come in and score goals.

"Not everybody can play for Real Madrid as there is so much pressure and expectation – so it needs to be the right player."
