Serie A match report Juventus v Benevento

Juventus suffered a shock 1-0 loss at the hands of relegation-threatened Benevento in Serie A on Sunday afternoon.

Leonardo Bonucci, Federico Bernardeschi and Arthur Melo returned as Juventus opted for three changes from the win over Cagliari last Saturday.

Juventus set off immediately when Cristiano Ronaldo found an opening inside the box from a loose ball, but in the end dragged wide of the far post.

The visitors started to open up and come into their own before the half-hour mark following a cross from the right-side, but Artur Ionita couldn't make the most of the inviting opportunity.

Momentum returned to the champions inside the remaining 12 minutes of the half when Alvaro Morata burst into the box to get a shot away, but goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo parried.

Ronaldo did go on to put the ball beyond Montipo on 38 minutes from a cross by Dejan Kulusevski, but the flag went up for offside against the Portuguese.

A lengthy spell of pressure from the record-breaking Italian champions saw them enter the second half eager to go in front, but Federico Chiesa amongst others failed to capitalise.

Then, a counter-attack from the host midway in the second half brought Kulusevski in with a chance, but the Swede watched his attempt parried by the opposite number Montipo.

Benevento seized initiative with their first decent attack inside the last 20 minutes after Adolfo Gaich capitalised on a mistake by Arthur to hold off a challenge from Danilo to latch home.

A double substitution from Andrea Pirlo followed towards the latter phases, as Rodrigo Bentancur came on to replace Arthur and Weston McKennie in for Adrien Rabiot.

Despite the alterations, Juventus failed to stage a comeback as the visitors held on to confirm victory.
