PSG boss reacts to UCL embarrassment: 'It's unfair'

Following a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has reacted to the shock result, insisting it isn't a fair one.

The French giants suffered their heaviest group-stage defeat ever in the Champions League after goals by Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and a stoppage-time stunner by Fabian Schar ensured that the Magpies also claimed their biggest win ever in the competition.

Despite being tipped by many as the favourites to emerge victorious from what is considered this campaign's "group of death", PSG's record of winning every second group-stage game for the past 10 seasons has now been put to an end in emphatic fashion, with Newcastle now top of Group F.

However, Les Parisiens' manager believes the result was unfair on his side, despite it being his heaviest defeat since taking charge of the Ligue 1 giants in July.

"Those are difficult games to live through for a manager," Enrique told Canal+.

"I sincerely think the result is a bit unfair, but not totally.

"Congratulations to Newcastle, they played very good football.

"But the scoreline is excessive."

Minutes later, he also told RMC Sport: "The result is so big for them. But I think we didn't deserve that result."

On the other hand, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was beaming with confidence after the iconic victory, telling Sky Sports: "An amazing evening for us. So many stories to talk about within the game itself, but just first and foremost, delighted for everyone connected with the club.

"What the supporters gave us tonight was incredible.

"They are such a good team. We had to defend really well and we did.

"I thought, collectively, our spirit and our energy was excellent. We created the positive things we had in the first half from really aggressive pressing, everything that's a hallmark of ours when we play well.

"Then, second half we had to dig deep and get over the line."
