Man City pip Bayern to set up blockbuster UCL semi

Manchester City will meet Real Madrid in the UEFA Champion League semi-finals after defeating Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate in the last eight.

Full-back Joao Cancelo was recalled to the Bayern line-up against his parent club, while Eric Choupo-Moting started upfront after missing the first-leg loss in Manchester.

The Bavarians should have been one goal ahead after 17 minutes when Leroy Sane was released through on goal, but the former City winger failed to hit the target with only goalkeeper Ederson to beat.

The hosts had the assistant referee to thank for not going a man down when Haaland was brought down by Dayot Upamecano after going through on goal. The referee showed a straight red card for the defender, but reversed his decision after the City striker was flagged offside.

Out of nowhere, Pep Guardiola's charges were given a big chance to extend their lead in the tie when they were awarded a penalty after Upamecano was deemed to have handled in the box.

The in-form Erling Haaland took responsibility from 12-yards out, but failed to hit the target after ballooning his effort over the crossbar as it remained goalless in Munich.

Haaland made amends for his miss in the second half when he opened the scoring on 57 minutes he collected a pass from Kevin de Bruyne before skipping past Upamecano before firing into the far corner.

Both sides looked to their bench for the final 25 minutes as Nathan Ake seemingly picked up a knock and was replaced by Aymeric Laporte, while Bayern threw on Sadio Mane for Sane.

The Bavarians were able to grab a consolation goal in the tie after being awarded a penalty in the final ten minutes, with Joshua Kimmich convert through the middle to make 1-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.

Semi-Finals:

Real Madrid v Manchester City

AC Milan v Inter Milan
