Seydouba Soumah: From the Absa Premiership to Old Trafford, ex-Ajax Cape Town prodigal journey explained

Former Ajax Cape Town playmaker Seydouba Soumah will line up against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

After being discovered by Ajax as a 12-year-old during an away trip to Guinea for a CAF Champions League tie, the trip to Old Trafford marks another significant milestone.

Soumah, 28, made just 10 appearances for Ajax in the South African top-flight but played an integral role in his development to professional football in Europe.

Former Urban Warriors owner John Comitis revealed to BBC Football how the remarkable journey started for the 30-time capped Guinea playmaker.

"Behind the goal while we were training the day before our game, there was this young boy juggling a tennis ball." Comitis explained.

"When I say to you that I didn't see it drop more than three times in a half-hour, I'm not kidding. He used left foot, right foot, knee, the back of his neck, on his head.

"I couldn't believe it. Gordon comes up to me, midway through the session, and asks 'have you been watching this kid?' I said 'yes, can you believe it? Call him here' So he calls the kid over and he is all shy."

Comitis added: "I speak French, so I asked him 'how old are you?' He said 'I'm 12'. 'Can you do this with the big ball?' We threw him the ball and he started to juggle it.

"It was absolute wizardry. Our players were standing around and starting to cheer him. We asked him if he could play. He said, 'yes I can play'.

"So we got him into the five-a-side game and our guys couldn't get the ball off him. He was so quick. He was knocking the ball off, it was just an amazing thing to see in a kid so young."

What happened next?

After two years of negotiating paperwork with his family, Soumah was legally adopted by Comitis in order to join the Cape Town-based academy.

And upon his arrival, the diminutive attacker featured in just one U15 training session before being promoted to the U17's and soon made his league debut under Muhsin Ertugral at 16-years-old.

Loan spells with Ikapa Sporting and FC Cape Town followed after falling out of favour due to his alleged work-rate issues - before he ventured abroad, earning various degrees of success over the past decade.

Now lining up with Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade, the talented attacking midfielder will have to chance to showcase his remarkable talent at the Theatre of Dreams.

Soumah has scored seven goals and registered eight assists in 22 games this season for 27-time SuperLiga champions.
