His expression of emotion came after his penalty, which could have very well have secured his side the victory by the end of the 120 minutes, was saved by Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak.

However, with the teams still unable to be separated by the end of extra-time, the 39-year-old attacker managed to pull himself back together when matters had to be decided in a shootout.

The former Juventus stepped up first and converted his spot kick. Portugal ended up 3-0 victors in the penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa shining between the sticks.

Speaking about Ronaldo's outburst, former Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor empathised with his former teammate, suggesting that only footballers would understand his emotions in the moment.

"Kicking a penalty kick for your country is a great thing, the whole country is watching you, especially when your name is Ronaldo," Adebayor said per Al Nassr Zone via Naija News.

"Honestly, from an emotional point of view, Cristiano has every reason to cry. If you are not a footballer, you will not be able to understand."
