Manchester United's struggles on the road continued after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
Cameroonian Andre Onana, who had a winning debut on Monday against Wolverhampton Wanderers, earned another start as the host had their first home match without Harry Kane.
It was a purposed opening for United as Alejandro Garnacho collected possession from Pedro Porro and set-up Antony for a strike, but he drilled over.
Garnacho looked to go in on his own a little later though failed to beat Guglielmo Vicario after launching a telling cutback wide of the six-yard area.
Spurs were on the up following a subdued opening and saw Dejan Kulusevski collect a layoff from a move involving captain Heung Min-Son to bring a fine stop off Onana.
The Red Devils had a golden chance to go ahead ten minutes before halftime through a header in the area by Bruno Fernandes from Luke Shaw's cross, but he steered wide.
Spurs pushed up again five minutes later as Onana palmed Porro's point-blank shot from Son's release onto the upright before Shaw deflected the rebound effort from Papa Sarr in off the post.
However, Sarr made amends five minutes after halftime when he helped a perfectly placed delivery from Kulusevski into an unguarded net.
The Red Devils were very close to draw level as Antony picked up a through pass from Fernandes to cut-inside before firing off the post.
Spurs continued to sit on the back-foot minutes apart and needed a superb one-hand stop from Vicario to thwart a ferocious header by Carlos Casemiro.
With Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial introduced by United, the host got a second after Lisandro Martinez attempted a clearance but ended up finding his own net.
The visitors looked to stage a comeback before full-time with numerous forward entries, but weren't able to get through and saw Spurs to victory.
