Driver opens up on rescuing Onana from Ugandan fans

The driver who rescued Cameroon and Manchester United star Andre Onana from a mob of excited Ugandan fans has now opened up on the ordeal.

Onana made headlines across the continent after he was mobbed by hundreds of Ugandan supporters following Cameroon's 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday.

The match was played at the Mandela National Stadium in Uganda due to Zimbabwe not having a venue that meets CAF and FIFA's stadium requirements.

After keeping a clean sheet for Cameroon, Onana had to leave the stadium separately from the rest of his teammates, and was picked up by a private car that rescued him from crowds of star-struck supporters and dropped him off at the airport.

The driver who came to the United star's rescue, a man named Juma Ssemazzi, has now revealed that his trip was pre-arranged, but added that he did not know that it would be Onana he was picking up.

"This car was part of the Cameroon delegation," Ssemazzi told Uganda outlet Kawowo Sports.

"I was picked by FUFA (the Ugandan FA) to drive the leader of the Cameroon advance party, Arnold Ebolo, who arrived in the country on Saturday and I have been part of them since.

"I was aware since we left the hotel with everything packed with the programme reading Namboole to the airport directly, but thought it was all about dropping him [Ebolo] and I parked just opposite the team buses at the stadium.

"As I was waiting for my boss [Ebolo], he calls and asks me to drive the car towards the entrance, and a barricade was removed to allow the car come near the buses.

"As I waited there, there came Ebolo with Onana. He told me I must drop him off immediately at the airport.

"It was then that Onana asked me: 'Bro, can we make it to the airport in 20 minutes?' and I told him it was impossible but we made it in 35 minutes.

"He was due to fly with Brussels Airlines, with the flight scheduled for 11pm."

Asked what he discussed with the goalkeeper during the car trip, Ssemazzi added: "Nothing much, but when we reached Kitooro, he told me: 'Bro, you are the best'."
