The issue of age will always create debates in football, but there is no argument about Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi on the international stage.
Arubi is the first-choice keeper at Gallants, where he is now into his second stint following his return at the beginning of the season.

That return to regular minutes after being back up at SuperSport United has coincided with another return.
This time to the Zimbabwe national team, taking over some 18 years since he made his senior national team debut.
When the 2025 AFCON qualifiers started in September, the Warriors were desperately in need of a new keeper after Bernard Donovan, Godfrey Chitsumba, Talbert Shumba, and Petros Mhari were all tried with no success in recent times.
Arubi honoured the call and has stepped up to play all six games in the successful qualifying campaign, doing so at the age of 39 and with the keeper coaching expertise of Pernell McKop next to him.

It is now without doubt that he is now the first choice and is in prime position to remain so at next year's AFCON finals.
With the tournament in Morocco being played from December 21 to January 18, Arubi will have already celebrated his 40th birthday by then.
That will be his debut tournament having never earned any of his caps at the AFCON finals.

This will put him in the same ranks as Essam El Hadary, Elias Pelembe, and Mohammed Lawal in playing at the AFCON past the age of 40.
Incredible for a goalkeeper who was without a contract just four months ago following the expiry of his deal at SuperSport, where he was back-up.
