Report: Chiefs 'show interest' in ex-Al Ahly star

According to reports from North Africa, Kaizer Chiefs are said to be one of the clubs interested in a potential move for a recently departed Al Ahly star.

It was confirmed on Monday that Tunisian defender Ali Maaloul has officially left Al Ahly as a free agent.

The 35-year-old spent eight-and-a-half seasons in Cairo, where he won an impressive six Egyptian Premier League titles as well as the CAF Champions League four times, as per Transfermarkt.

Capped 93 times by his country, Tunisia, Maaloul will bring vast experience wherever he decides to go next, with a few potential destinations having recently been mooted.

According to news outlet Egypt Telegraph, Maaloul is now exploring his options, and there is interest in his services from both Africa and the Gulf region.

The report claims that Qatari club Al-Gharafa showed real interest in signing the player recently, while South African side Kaizer Chiefs are also said to be keeping an eye on Maaloul, according to the Egyptian publication.

Another club in Africa, Sfaxien, has also been linked with the Tunisian veteran.

Maaloul's agent, John Edward, reportedly revealed that Al Ahly did not register his client for the 2024/25 campaign due to a long-term injury he sustained during the final of the CAF Champions League last season.

However, after the player recovered this month, the agent further claimed that Al Ahly management did not communicate what the future held for Maaloul. Therefore, it was decided that the left-footed star should explore his options elsewhere.
