'I want these 4 African nations to co-host World Cup'

A prominent politician has expressed his ambition for four African countries to make a joint bid to co-host the 2038 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa made history in 2010 by becoming the first country from the continent to host the World Cup.

Morocco will be the second African country to stage the prestigious tournament in 2030, although they will co-organise the competition with Spain and Portugal.

Now, Cameroonian politician Maurice Kamto, who will be running for president in the national elections in October 2024, has revealed that he will mobilise four African nations to make a joint bid to host the 2038 edition of the global showpiece.

"I would like Cameroon to co-host the 2038 FIFA World Cup with Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Ghana—four great footballing nations in Africa and the world," Kamto said in an interview published by Kongossa TV.

"It is no coincidence that Cameroon is respected globally because we were the ones who helped Africa secure additional World Cup slots. That alone should give us the right to aspire to host the tournament.

"Why have I chosen 2038? Firstly, because the earlier editions have already been allocated. Secondly, it gives us enough time to prepare and reach the required standards."

According to reports in Cameroon, Kamto will first need to overcome reigning national president Paul Biya in the upcoming elections later this year.

It is suggested that the 90-year-old Biya is still the favourite to retain power despite running for a seventh successive term as president.
