EARNED: Downs keeper’s unquestionable PSL legendary status

The legendary status earned by Denis Onyango will be undisputed as his playing contract at Mamelodi Sundowns rolls down towards its expiry at the end of June.

For all the arguments that always erupt in defining a legend, Onyango embodies it to the last dot.

The Ugandan has lasted 19 years in the PSL since his arrival from Ethiopian club Saint George.

At Sundowns, he now has teammates that were either not yet born or were still in their nappies when he joined SuperSport United in July 2006.

Onyango is also holding the position of being the most successful footballer to ever play in South Africa as he moves towards his 40th birthday in May.

Beyond the 11 league titles, he has won the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, African Football League, Nedbank Cup (thrice), Telkom Knockout (twice), and MTN8, pushing his total silverware collection to 20.

League title number 12 is in sight with the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League still there for the taking, plus the possibility of a second run at the FIFA Club World Cup.
