AFCON 2019: Thembinkosi Lorch on Stuart Baxter tactics and message to his loyal supporters

Bafana Bafana winger Thembinkosi Lorch has shed light on the tactical instructions of head coach Stuart Baxter after their historic last-16 win over Egypt at AFCON 2019.
Lorch, 25, scored the winning goal in the 85th minute to dump hosts Egypt out of the tournament in front of 75 000 fans at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening.   READ: I thought it wasn't a goal - Lorch   And after the game he admitted the tactical instruction from Baxter was not to try and soak up the pressure, but rather press higher up the pitch to surprise The Pharaohs led by African Player of the Year, Mohamed Salah.   "No, we weren't sitting back, we pressed them high, they were always playing long balls and we were there for every second ball once it dropped, even the goal it was similar - although it was almost like a counter-attack," he said.   "I think we could have scored more, Lars [Veldwijk] got a chance and the keeper [Mohamed El Shenaway] saved it, even with Percy, but yeah I think it was a good game."   On the concerns about his fitness, having not featured in a single game during the Group stage fixtures, the Orlando Pirates star admitted he felt the effects of the pulsating fixture - before declaring his Man of the Match display was also for the supporters who called his inclusion in the starting XI.   READ: Koulibaly 'not surprised' by Morocco exit
"I was worried about my fitness, you know, even you saw, I was cramping [in the game] but the confidence [from last season] is still there, I just needed the minutes to play.   "This goal means a lot, especially for the supporters, this goal? It was for the supporters, they are the ones that were always supporting me, even my family at home, even my late brother, it was for him."   READ: Egypt coach sacked after Bafana loss   He added that Baxter was crucial to their high spirits after the widespread criticism of their displays in the opening three games of the continental showpiece: "We had to just soldier on, it happened, you know?   "If we didn't play well for the first few games, the coach [Baxter] told us to just be positive and encourage each other and keep playing for one another."   Lorch will be aiming to retain his place in the starting line-up when South Africa take on Nigeria in the quarter-final stage at the National Stadium on 10 June.
