Tunisia defeated Ghana 5-4 on penalties to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday evening.
Afriyie Acquah made his first start for Ghana, while Tunisia's four changes saw Ghaylene Chalali, Ferjani Sassi, Anice Badri and Yassine Khenissi come in to the line-up.
Ghana exempted the earlier pressure, as Nuhu headed against the upright 16 minutes in from a corner-kick.
Tunisia held their own despite the relentless pressure from their counterparts, who left nothing to chance.
Controversy surfaced three minutes to halftime after the Black Stars fumed for Andre Ayew's disallowed back-heel finish, with the match officials signalling a handball in the build-up.
With no changes during the interval, the tense and compactness of the encounter reared forth earlier in the second stanza. The Tunisians remained stuck in their own territory, with the West Africans winning every physical, aerial and one-on-one contest.
Hoping to change this, Wahbi Khazri was brought in to revive Tunisia's attacking component 68 minutes in with Anice Badri making way. With their first shot on goal, the Carthage Eagles made it count on 73 minutes as Khenissi collected a low cross from Wajdi Kechrida to find the bottom corner.
Looking for a way back, Kwesi Appiah threw on record goal-scorer Asamoah Gyan for Ayew six minutes to full-time.
Tunisia looked to close shop in added time and introduced Rami Bedoui for Khenissi to aid that quest. The opposite happened instead as Bedoui nodded the ball in to his own net while attempting a clearance in the last seconds.
In extra time, chances dropped in either spell with neither outfit able to get the winner as a penalty shoot-out ensued.
A spate of successful kicks opened the shootout, until Caleb Ekuban missed for the Ghanaians while the Tunisians netted all their five spot kicks to secure a last eight date with Madagascar.
