'It's not me' - Williams reveals secret behind penalty heroics

South African national team goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has credited two members of the technical team following his record-setting performance in a penalty shootout as Bafana Bafana defeated Cape Verde to secure a spot in the semi-final of the AFCON.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper saved a jaw-dropping four penalties as Bafana walked away 2-1 winners in a tightly contested encounter that had ended in a goalless draw at the end of extra-time.

It was the first time in the history of the competition that a goalkeeper has saved that many penalties in a single shootout.

Speaking at the post-match press conference after the match, Williams was reluctant to take credit for the victory, instead insisting that team analyst Sinesipho Mali and goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson deserved the praise.

"In the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations underway in Ivory Coast after defeating Cape Verde in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.

"I give credit to the analyst [Mali], the analysts, they prepare me," Williams said.

"They cut so many videos. We study the clips, I study them as well, I try and pick up trends. So, yeah, it's not me.

"Like I said, I give credit to the analysts and the goalkeeper coach (Johnson) as well, as they sent me so many clips and my phone is full of penalty clips and it's credit to the analyst because it's not so easy to get footage of some of these players because they play all over the world.

"So big ups to the analysts for preparing the clips for me to watch and study. They made my job 50% easier because of an idea where most of the players were going."

Up next for Bafana is a semi-final clash against Nigeria to be played on Wednesday. Kick-off is at 19:00.
