The highly-anticipated Champions League draw is set for December with the top four seeded teams in Pot 1.
Each of the groups will consist of teams from the four pots.
Usuthu face the prospect of facing both Al Ahly (Pot 1) and Mamelodi Sundowns (Pot 2) in what will pit Benni McCarthy against familiar adversaries.
Alternatively, AmaZulu could be drawn against both Al Ahly and Zamalek alongside ES Setif or CR Belouizdad of Algeria which would mean three arduous trips to North Africa.
There is also the potential of facing Tunisian pair of Esperance and Etoile du Sahel considering that there are no restrictions on clubs from the same country being drawn in the same group.
What might be the best-case scenario for Usuthu will be a group consisting of Raja Casablanca, Horoya and Petro de Luanda.
The group stage fixtures will run over a duration from February 11 to April 2 next year.
Congolese heavyweights TP Mazembe and RS Berkane from Morocco are the only clubs in the top 10 of the CAF five-year ranking system not featuring in the group stages this season.
TP Mazembe were knocked out by AmaZulu dropping down to the CAF Confederation Cup play-offs where they will find RS Berkane among the teams waiting.
In order of points accumulated in the last five years the Pots are as below:
Pot 1 – Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Raja Casablanca (Morocco)
Pot 2 – Zamalek (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns, Horoya (Guinea), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia)
Pot 3 – Al Hilal (Sudan), CR Belouizdad (Algeria), Petro de Luanda (Angola), ES Setif (Algeria)
Pot 4 – Al Merrikh (Sudan), Sagrada Esperanca (Angola), AmaZulu, Jwaneng Galaxy (Botswana)
