'They must not give Al Ahly time to breathe'

A former Mamelodi Sundowns defender remains optimistic that the 2016 CAF Champions League winners will suffocate Al Ahly in the blockbuster semi-final clash set for Saturday.

Sundowns and Al Ahly are set for a blockbuster Champions League match-up at Loftus Vesfeld on Saturday, with a place in the final on the line.

Wayne Arendse was part of the Sundowns side that went all the way, against all odds, nine years ago as they defeated Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate in the final.

"Historically, Al Ahly have never been overly convincing in their wins, but they consistently reach the knockout stages. They know how to navigate this Champions League," details Arendse, previewing the fixture with KickOff.com

"So, you can't underestimate them thinking they are no longer the same Ahly. I can assure you they are a strong team, which is why they have made it to the semi-finals.

"On Saturday, the stadium will be full, so Sundowns just need to be clinical and take their opportunities. They are in the semi-finals now, and it’s the right time to push for the final.

"They should respect Al Ahly, while also having the confidence to attack. But they must remain cautious at the back. At times, they might try to overplay, but they should aim to score at least two goals, especially since they are playing at home," he says.

Arendse says given the Johannesburg altitude, The Brazilians need to take the game to the record champions.

"The longer the score remains 0-0, the more it favours Al Ahly. They must not give Al Ahly time to breathe. If the ball goes out for a throw-in, it should be taken quickly. We need to push hard in the first 45 minutes. Around the 66th minute, the effects of the altitude will start to kick in.

"Hopefully, this will be their year. Sundowns have the potential to earn their second star. It's all about believing in themselves."

Kick-off is at 15:00.
