My Locker Room Secrets: Bonang Ngaka

In the latest edition of My Locker Room Secrets, KickOff gets Bonang Ngaka to dish the dirt on his former Lamontville Golden Arrows teammates, including the 'strange character' who wore a long coat.

Ngaka joined Abafana Bes'thende in 1999 when coach Malombo Sibiya was still at the helm.

He spent four years at the KwaZulu-Natal-based club, and lists winning promotion to the Premier Soccer League as his biggest achievement.

Who was always late?

"The biggest culprit was Musa Mntakwende. He loved gambling. I remember him missing our flight from Durban to Jo'burg because of his love for gambling. Because of that, he had to take the next plane to Jo'burg."

Any interesting rituals before you played?

"I was a man of God, even though I was not praying that much. I remember our late former captain, Bheka Phakathi, would make sure he tied some string around his waist. That's something he did before every match. And he did that in front of everyone."

Who was the jokester?

"Nhlanhla Mshibe and Siza Dlamini. These two loved teasing other players. They would target the new faces who were boarding a plane for the first time.

"They would tell the poor souls not to order too much food because food was not free on the plane [laughs]. They'd only find out later on our way back that food on the plane was free."

Was it a muti change room?

"At Arrows, there was this strange guy who used to stand outside the change room's door. That guy wouldn't say a word to anyone. He was always wearing a long coat. We could tell he was our muti man.

"Sometimes he'd place burning incense right by the door. He never said a word to anyone. No one knew what his voice sounded like."

Who was the singer?

"The late Bheka Phakathi. That was before the arrival of Siphiwe Mkhonza at the club."

Who was the best-dressed and who was the worst-dressed?

"Siyabonga George Khanyile. The guy can dress himself. He was mostly in his casual clothes. You could see he was from KwaMashu. He was very smart.

"As for the worst-dressed, I'd say all the foreign players. They loved wearing these bright colours, especially our goalkeeper Francis Chansa. What kind of a man wears a pink shirt?"

Who never showered?

"Bongani Ntshangase. We used to call him 'Shushu Baby'. After training, he headed straight to our transport, not to the showers.

"I remember Tshepo Ntsoane telling him to find another transport because he no longer wanted him in his car. You know how bad the body odour of someone who is from the gym is."
