Bumper crowd for Chiefs’ first home game

It is without doubt that Kaizer Chiefs enjoy the biggest following in South Africa and the evidence of that will be on show again on Saturday when they host Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their opening home match of the Betway Premiership is an appetising contest against the defending champions.

Saturday match at FNB Stadium (15:00) will quench the thirst for Chiefs'] fans, who are yet to get a close-up view of their team with the first two matches having been in Bloemfontein and Durban

If ever the side needed the appropriate home match to start the season, then The Brazilians will provide the perfect challenge.

Bertie Grobbelaar, the Stadium Management SA boss, confirmed that as of Thursday afternoon, ticket sales were at 44 000.

KickOff understands that that number has since gone up with the ticking of the clock, with more than 52 000 having been sold by late Thursday.

The last time Sundowns took the short trip to FNB Stadium, it was in May, and there were 23 000 tickets sold, with Chiefs humiliated 5-1.

"Illegal tickets and fans arriving early," pointed out Grobbelaar about subjects of discussions at hand for Saturday's game, which will come with free parking for all fans.

With FNB Stadium having a capacity of 94 700, the stadium will have its biggest crowd for a non-Soweto Derby match.

Expectations are that a crowd that will surpass 60 000 will be in attendance on Saturday for the match between the two most successful clubs throughout the PSL era years.

Chiefs fans have not watched their team playing at home since the day Itumeleng Khune played his last match in the goalless draw against Polokwane City in May.
