Chiefs handing Sirino ‘green leaf’

Kaizer Chiefs' decision to turn to Gaston Sirino is gradually becoming reminiscent of the Uruguayan's best days in the league during his successful time at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sirino won seven league titles throughout his time at Sundowns, before he was then discarded during off-season, paving the way for him to move to Chiefs on a free transfer.

Arriving at Naturena, the 33-year-old has turned into an immediate hit as proven by what he has done in three games – one goal and two assists playing from wide areas in midfield.

Starts in three league matches in a row might sound little, but Sirino didn't manage that in his last three seasons at Sundowns.

Yes, for the last three years reporting at Chloorkop, he never got to be able to start just three league games in a row.

The last time he started at least three consecutive league games was in early 2021.

This was from the end of January to the start of April when he was on the field from the first whistle in matches against Chippa United, Baroka, Stellenbosch FC, Black Leopards and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

His return was three goals and he had one assist throughout that purple patch.

Sirino has now delivered one goal and two assists in three starts at Amakhosi, where he has been able to last 74 minutes at worst and put in a full shift at best.

If Chiefs is to click this season, then Sirino must have his creativity volume on high as he can pierce through defences with passes.

Saturday wasn't his best outing against his former employers, but he provided the delivery that almost resulted into an equaliser from Edson Castillo's header.

So far, so good for Sirino under Nasreddine Nabi.
