Downs returnee gets his longest run

Bolivian midfielder Erwin Saavedra marked his return to matchday action for Mamelodi Sundowns with his longest run of minutes ever over the weekend.

Saavedra has returned to Sundowns after having only been on loan at Club Bolivar since the beginning of the year.

There were widespread reports that he had moved permanently following his troubles at Chloorkop, where he struggled to make an impact during the first two years that he spent at the club.

The 28-year-old had a horror stay at the side, managing only 10 appearances (totalling 265 minutes) in two years, before then heading back to familiar surroundings at Club Bolivar, where he played 13 matches.

He even played 90 minutes in four of those games.

On the contrary, Saavedra has never played from start to finish in The Brazilians' colours and his return over the weekend was the longest that he has ever lasted on the pitch for them.

He was wearing jersey number 8 as he started in midfield and was only withdrawn with six minutes remaining.

That was 84 minutes of precious game-time for the Bolivian, who has now become the fourth foreign player registered by the seven-time consecutive league champions this season after Marcelo Allende (Chile) and the Brazilian pair of Arthur de Oliviera Sales and Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

Prior to the CAF Champions League second-leg tie against Mbabane Swallows, the longest that Saavedra had been on the pitch was 57 minutes against AmaZulu FC two years ago.

"More than 99% of the players that got a chance today really played at the level that I expected and at the level that I loved," noted Mngqithi in the post-match press conference on Saturday.
