My Welcome To The League Moment: Phelelani Mpangase

In our exciting feature My Welcome To The League Moment, KickOff speaks to former Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Phelelani Mpangase who reveals a player who gave him a tough time during his football career.

Mpangase says his biggest test in the Premiership came against Ajax Cape Town in 2009.

"I have played CAF, I have played whatever, but the most difficult game for me was against Ajax Cape Town, and I was with Mamelodi Sundowns," Mpangase tells KickOff.

"My first game was against Maritzburg United on the 17th of December 2009. I had signed for Sundowns on December 12.

"And throughout I was always in the 18 or 20 men squad, that was the coach's way of preparing me.

"But facing Ajax in Cape Town, that was my most difficult game. As you know in Cape Town mostly you played at night.

"I was marking Sameehg Doutie, in my whole career that's the player who gave me the most difficult time.

"Bear in mind it was my second game and Ajax were a very, very structured team.

"They had the likes of Khama Billiat, Thulani Serero, Franklin Cale. And now Doutie's game was not predictable, he could run into space, could cut inside, could play combination passes, could deliver a cross and could dribble.

"Whenever I received the ball I had no idea what to do. After 30 minutes Esrom Nyandoro and Michael Manzini came to me and said, try to prevent him from being the first one on the ball.

"I tried that, it worked for a while, but after that, I had to kick him. I tried to make my presence felt.

"I had to even change my boots, I was wearing multi studs but ended up changing into six studs.

"Towards halftime, I managed to kick him, and I was booked. The likes of Manzini kept on encouraging me to kick Doutie.

"Around 55 minutes Doutie raised his hand signalling to his coach Foppe De Haan to pull him out.

"He was replaced by Mkhanyiseli Siwahla, another problem. Manzini approached me again, he said to me, immediately he receives the ball please kick him.

"And that's what I exactly did. Immediately Siwahla received the ball I stepped on his ankle.

"From there onwards Siwahla made sure he played far from me. I said thank you, lord."
