‘I feel Ronwen is now the best’

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams' recent performances have reignited the argument about his standing as arguably the best South African goalkeeper ever.   

Williams has delivered to perfection for both club and country.

His showing at the recent AFCON led to him being voted as the best goalkeeper at the tournament.

He kept five clean sheets in seven games and saved penalties while playing every minute of Bafana Bafana's games at the recent AFCON finals.

At club level, Williams has 21 clean sheets in 28 games and has only conceded eight goals.

"In the last few years Ronwen has definitely improved to levels that give him reason to arguably the best to ever play here," says retired Gerald Wagner, who also hails from Gqeberha.

Wagner played for Bush Bucks and was in the Under-20 squad that went to the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championships.

"His command of the area is up there with the best in the game and what we saw of him with Bafana at the AFCON is proof.

"The argument about whether he is the best we have ever had is relative.

"We have had great keepers in different eras from Andre Arendse, Brian Baloyi, Hans Vonk, Calvin Marlin through to the more recent ones.

"They have all shown that they are the best in the country.

"Based on what we have seen in recent times, I would say he has become the best keeper.

"How can you doubt a keeper who has gone to the AFCON and come back as the best in that position?

"If you are basing it on current performance then he is miles ahead.

Ronwen Williams has been described as being just a

"Ronwen is my homeboy so I would be vouching for him in saying that he is the best keeper on the continent. 

"If you are basing it on clean sheets and penalty then he is also ahead of all.

"The argument from others will then be that why is he not playing overseas.

"However, I still feel he is the best.

"Honestly, I feel Ronwen is now the best.

"I have seen his leadership qualities which have been embraced by the Bafana coach (Hugo Broos). 

"He is also able to play with his feet like the (Andre) Onanas of this world," says Wagner.
