Jomo Sono addresses Jomo Cosmos PSL promotion question

Going into the 2020/21 GladAfrica Championship season, this will be Ezenkosi's fifth attempt to get back to the top tier of South African football after they were relegated in the 2015/16 season.

Asked if he will finally emulate Swallows FC by winning promotion and returning to the premier division, Sono does not sound too confident.

"I can't say, honestly I don't know," the South African soccer icon tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"We just want to compete like we normally compete every year. We've got a completely new team because we got rid of all the players that were here before the bubble. We got rid of close to 18 to 20 players."

Reminded that most of the club's fans want to know if winning promotion will be one of his targets this season, Sono responds: "I repeat, I don't answer to ghosts, because they don't help me to pay salaries.

"They don't help me to buy food for my home. You can't doubt my passion for football. Passion is still the same like when I was 15 years old playing for Orlando Pirates. It will only change once I'm dead. This is the only sport I know.

"We are missing playing in the premier league, for sure. All 16 teams want to play there because that's where the glamour is, that's where the grant is... you know the cake is bigger than where we are. So ja we miss it, but give us a chance, we'll compete."

Sono predicts a tough season ahead as there will be a few new teams such as Sekhukhune United, Cape Town All Stars, Pretoria Callies and Bizano Pondo Chiefs on board.

"It's going to be tough because we don't know the teams, we don't know who we are playing against. All 16 teams are competing. They didn't invest so much money just to give away points," he says.

"So it's going to be a very difficult league. GladAfrica is always difficult every year, because all the teams are competing for only one position. The playoffs are a jackpot. Anybody can go to the playoffs and it's not guaranteed you will win.

"We've been playing [friendly] games with amateur teams so you can't judge yourself until our first game against Sekhukhune [on Tuesday, 1 December]. Only after that game we will know where we stand.

"For now we are in the darkness because we don't have any knowledge about the opposition. And there's this big incentive of R3-million plus promotion."
