Simo Dladla’s men got off to the worst possible start after Mzoxolo Rafani pounced in decisive fashion to give the host the lead in the opening ten minutes of the match.
The Team of Choice attempted to get back on level terms, but the host pulled out all the stops to secure the win and dented the visitors title charge.
As a result, City remain six points clear of second-place Kruger United, who take on Black Leopards on Sunday.
Dladla's charges will be back in action against Milford FC on Tuesday afternoon.
Upington City 0-0 JDR Stars
JDR Stars once again failed to make in-roads to the top-three after a frustrating goalless draw at the struggling Upington City.

Venda Football Academy 0-0 Hungry Lions
Venda Football Academy were unable to ease their relegation fears after playing to a goalless draw against Hungry Lions at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
The home team got a perfect chance to seal the win through a penalty in additional time, but Rotonswa Mutsivhuli squandered the opportunity and all square it finished.
Given the draw, it’s a missed opportunity for Venda who remain in the bottom-two as Di Tau continue to hover outside the top eight.

With the clash level towards full-time, the host rose to the fore and bagged the winner at the death courtesy of Siphosethu Ndlabi’s effort.
Casric Stars 1-1 Baroka FC
Casric Stars missed the chance to go second on the Championship table after a 1-1 draw against Baroka FC on Friday.
Stars drew first blood courtesy of Decide Chauke, but Bakgaga bounced back after the interval and salvaged a point through Kabelo Kgositsile.
The result extended the host unbeaten run to five-matches with Bakgaga on a three-match streak without defeat.
Cape Town Spurs 0-0 Orbit College
Orbit College also failed to close-in to the top-two following a goalless draw with struggling Cape Town Spurs.
The point does little for the Urban Warriors who are still 14th position, whilst Orbit’s outside chance to secure a top-two spot remain on track.
