Under-fire Mammila pleads his case

Baroka FC's head coach, Morgan Mammila, has responded to rumours circulating in the football industry that he will be history at the Motsepe Foundation Championship club by the time the sun sets on Monday.

Mammila has collected only a point in the opening two games of the season.

Last week, Bakgaga drew 1-1 with Orbit College at home in Lebowakgomo, and on the weekend, were thoroughly beaten 4-1 away by Upington City.

Mammila's future with the club is expected to be decided this afternoon (13:00).

"You know football is funny. You look at what's going on at Manchester United, Mamelodi Sundowns and at Wydad Athletic - it's just the way football is," Mammila says in declaring his case, speaking exclusively to KickOff.

"Sometimes players need to have that chemistry, and once you find that chemistry, you will enjoy it. We are still coming out of pre-season, and there are so many factors that are contributing to the poor start.

"Players were hoping to move [to bigger clubs], and they didn't move. Players were approached by other teams, all of which also play a big role in the current performance.

"You will never judge a person by two games, never! You can't tell me a coach is super good in only two games. There is no way!

"But it happens anyway, and what is happening at Sundowns, it happens in football.

"But no excuse, especially from me, a coach of a Motsepe Foundation Championship side, where what we want is only promotion and nothing else," he continues.

The former Chippa United coach reveals he is disappointed with their poor start to the season, having targeted at least four points from the opening two fixtures, saying that would have been a decent base to build from.

"But now it's one draw, one loss. I'm not happy. We were hoping for more.

"The job of coaches is always on the line. There were coaches who were fired before they even coached one match. That doesn't mean they are bad coaches, they are top coaches. So, who am I to say my job is safe? Remember I'm not working for myself. Every coach in the country, their jobs are not safe.

"Even if you are winning, your job is still safe because you might be winning by luck.

"The defence, that's the big problem of ours, and it's something that needs to be fixed immediately. Abdi Banda's work permit is taking time. That's the biggest problem because during the pre-season he was part and parcel of the main team. That's where we're falling apart. But there is no excuse, we just need to fix it."
