Palacios: It's wrong to receive salary when you are not performing

Former Orlando Pirates coach Augusto Palacios advises up-and-coming football stars in the Premier Soccer League to respect their employment contracts.

Palacios says players should honour their contracts and not think their employers are compelled to sell them just because they have received an offer somewhere else.

"These issues of players who want to go overseas, and the agent is involved... I think this is a private matter between the club and the player," Palacios tells KickOff.

"It is not good for the agent to go to the media and say, 'Hey, I have an offer for this player, and the club refused to release him', a player needs to perform to get an improved contract, get a national team call up, and overseas offer.

"Some of these players receive good salaries, and their clubs even pay bonuses. Once a player touches the field, he needs to think about his family and the future. You need to compete.

"Social media is killing our young players. They spend too much time there. They are on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, pumping in the photos, showing themselves in a car, at a party... These are some of the things that make a player perform well this week and next week not good," the coach adds.

"For example, look at the age of Makhehleni Makhaula and Deon Hotto. Look how good they are performing. Their commitment reminds me of Lucky Lekgwathi, Tebogo Moloi, Doctor Khumalo, Lucas Radebe, and many more.

"Do the current players understand that people pay money to buy tickets to go to the stadium? You are a footballer for 24 hours.

"But why should a player be not happy when he is not performing, he is missing training, he goes to the media, but why is he not performing? It's wrong to receive salary when you are not performing.

"You must always remember the three components, good private life, good eating, and good training.

"A player's club must have a very close relationship."
