Secret Footballer: Dagga almost killed me

In this edition of The Secret Footballer, a former PSL player shares a story about a frightening experience he had after inhaling too much dagga smoke in his hotel room.

"There was this teammate of mine who always insisted that I be his roommate. He didn't want to share a hotel room with anyone else, and I guess he liked me because I was the youngest," the secret footballer recalls.

"To be honest, that guy's career was ruined by dagga. He smoked way too much zol for my liking.

"During training camps, he would fill our hotel room with smoke, and then turn on the fan or the air conditioner, making the room feel like a freezer or a walk-in fridge.

"While the room was freezing, he would sit there sweating, take off his T-shirt, and keep smoking as if nothing was wrong.

"I just don't understand dagga smokers; sometimes I think they're a bit crazy.

"When he was smoking, I would get under the sheets to protect myself from the smoke as well as the cold air from the fan and the air conditioner.

"I had to endure it because no one could speak up or come to my rescue. Even the coaches and club bosses were scared of him. Dagga almost killed me that night.

"I remember one time he slapped one of our teammates five times during supper just because he thought he was gossiping about him.

"And to my surprise, everyone, including the coaches, stayed silent and did nothing about it.

"A lot happens behind the scenes in football, especially in hotels [laughs]."
