SA U-19 coach David Notoane urges Khanyisa Mayo not to be rushed into PSL football

Mayo set the U-19 Durban International Tournament alight, scoring six goals to claim the Golden Boot as well as the Player of the Tournament accolade, yet unfortunately ended on the losing side in the final against English giants Arsenal.

And having turned heads at the tournament, coach Notoane feels Mayo needs to be nurtured properly to reach his full potential.

"If you look at when he joined Supersport United’s academy, they’re doing a good job, but he's still a work in progress," Notoane said.

"He doesn't need to be rushed of course, because at the moment I'm sure he's probably training with the first team and probably part of the reserve Diski Challenge team.

"I'm sure within a year's time he should be somewhere competing for a starting berth in the first team, but that is difficult in the PSL, because you need mental character, you need technical astuteness and cleverness to sustain the level of resistance that you come up against in the PSL."

Notoane, who also coached Mamelodi Sundowns’ MDC team, adds that Mayo is still showing signs of youthfulness in decision making.

"In this tournament you could see that his youthfulness showed - he was a little bit nervous, too anxious to take his chances," he added.

"So hopefully as he goes back to his club, these kind of areas will be worked on because we’ve got a lot of these boys. Many of them have the technical ability to play in the PSL and have the technical awareness to play.

"It’s just the psychological aspect, the maturity aspect, the tactical aspect of applying what is required at the right time and that is what differentiates us and the Arsenals of the world."
