How last 5 Soweto Derby cup finals were settled

After Kaizer Chiefs set up a meeting with Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, KickOff looks back at the last five Soweto Derby cup finals.

A Soweto Derby cup final between Pirates and Chiefs has been very rare over the years, as after the 1988 Bob Save Super Bowl final between the sides, it took 18 years, in 2006, for another cup final.

The Buccaneers enjoyed the bragging rights of beating arch-rivals Amakhosi in a cup final for almost two decades after edging the Black and Gold half of Soweto 2-1 in extra-time in the Bob Save Super Bowl final.

The Glamour Boys only had their revenge in a cup final in 2006 when they beat Ezimnyama 5-3 on penalties to win the Absa Cup.

Chiefs former goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez was the hero as he saved a penalty and went on to score a winning spot-kick, as Amakhosi salvaged a season that threatened to go horribly wrong with at least one trophy.

It took just over four years for the two Soweto giants to meet again in a cup final, this time in the Telkom Knockout, as Amakhosi outclassed Pirates 3-0.

Former Amakhosi striker Sthembiso Ngcobo netted a brace while ex-winger Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a cracker, in what completed a league and cup double over their rivals.

Barely a year later, the country came to a standstill again in the MTN8 final, where Pirates beat Chiefs in a cup final for the first time since 1988, courtesy of a strike from Oupa Manyisa in extra-time in a pulsating 1-0 win.

Amakhosi waited three years to have the opportunity to settle the score in a cup final against the Buccaneers, as the two giants met again in the 2014 MTN8 final, where the Glamour Boys were crowned champions thanks to a lone goal by Tefu Mashamaite.
