Onana to make another AFCON U-turn?

Uncertainty regarding whether or not Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will represent Cameroon at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has surfaced once more.

The shot-stopper is considering pulling out of the tournament in order to retain his status as his club's No. 1 goalkeeper after a nightmare-inducing performance in Europe earlier this week, according to The Sun.

Onana has received much criticism for his blunders against Turkish side Galatasaray in a UEFA Champions League encounter that ended at 3-3 on Wednesday night, putting a further dent in the side's hopes of advancing to the next round of the competition.

After retiring from international football following an argument with head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Cameroonian looked set to join his national side in the new year as they prepare to compete in the AFCON that will run from 13 January to 11 February in the Ivory Coast after the pair mended their relationship.

Now, however, he is said to be fearful of losing his first team spot at United to Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who was also brought in by boss Erik ten Hag before the start of the current season.

The Dutch tactician has hinted at the possibility of the second-choice shot-stopper getting his opportunity in the first team after the match against Galatasaray.

"We are pleased with the goalkeeping group. They have to push each other," Ten Hag said.

"We are very pleased with Altay who is doing very well, he just has to be patient."

The Red Devils will now have to ensure they win their final group game against Bayern Munich, but that would only be enough for them to advance to the UCL round of 16 if Galatasaray and Copenhagen finish their encounter all square.
