In Africa: Mokwana in big win, Rulani suffers opening-day loss

Elias Mokwana and his ES Tunis side were victorious on the weekend, while Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic began their league campaign with a defeat.

The Blood and Gold secured a 3-0 victory over US Tataouine in their first 2024/25 Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 outing on Saturday, putting them top of the table and marking a good start as they look to defend their status as reigning champions.

Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida gave his side an early advantage by netting in the sixth minute, while Youcef Belaili and Yan Sasse got their names on the scoresheet just before half-time.

The scoreline would remain the same until the referee blew the final whistle, bringing a halt to proceedings, with South Africa's Mokwana only featuring for 13 minutes as a substitute.

Elsewhere on the continent, Wydad suffered a 1-0 defeat to Maghreb de Fes in their opening 2024/25 Botola Pro 1 encounter on Friday.

Looking to avoid a similar campaign to the previous one that saw them end the season in sixth place, the Moroccan giants will be hoping the South African tactician can swiftly turn things around.

Speaking after the game, Mokwena urged the club's fans to show patience and insisted that although the defeat was painful, his side did not deserve to lose.

Meanwhile in Egypt, Al Ahly have reportedly decided against allowing Percy Tau to depart the club, with the winger having been registered by the club as one of the players who will compete in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.

Despite being heavily linked with an exit ahead of the new Egyptian league season, the player looks set to stay with the Red Devils until the expiration of his contract in 2025.
