Messi sends message to teammate who beat Williams to Yashin Trophy

Lionel Messi has sent a message to his teammate who beat South Africa's Ronwen Williams to the prestigious Yashin Trophy on Monday night.

The Inter Miami star was not present at the 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, but acknowledged his countrymen as they competed for individual prizes.

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez ranked seventh in the race for the Men's Ballon d'Or, while Alejandro Garnacho finished sixth in the list of nominees for the Kopa Trophy, which was won by Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.

Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, meanwhile, beat the likes of Unai Simon, Andriy Lunin, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Mike Maignan and Williams, among others, to win his second consecutive Yashin Trophy.

"Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the Ballon d'Or 2024," Messi wrote on his Instagram story.

"Especially to Dibu [Emi Martinez's nickname] (what a great, another award for best goalkeeper in the world!), to Lautaro, to Leo and Ale.

"It's very nice to see them there!"

The former FC Barcelona star is no stranger to attending these ceremonies, given that he has won eight Ballon d'Or trophies in his career to date, with the last one coming just last year.

This time around, though, it was won by Manchester City star Rodri, with Real Madrid duo Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham occupying second and third place.

Williams may have finished ninth in the final placing for the 2024 Yashin Trophy, but will forever hold the title of being the first goalkeeper to be nominated for the award while playing for an African club.
