Late winner sends Man City third

Manchester City moved back into the top three on the Premier League table with a late 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

The hosts made just two changes from Saturday's win over Everton, with Mateo Kovacic and James McAtee coming in for Nico Gonzalez and Savinho.

Villa nearly got off to the perfect start when Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford carved out some space in the box before rattling the upright with a left-footed strike.

However, Pep Guardiola's charges went on to take the lead on six minutes later through Bernardo Silva's strike, although goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez should have done better with the save.

The visitors were afforded a lifeline on 17 minutes after being awarded a penalty for a foul on Jacob Ramsey, which allowed Rashford to step up and convert for the equaliser.

Neither side were able to sustain that early tempo, with Villa merely providing a threat on the break as Guardiola's side dominate possession.

City came out firing in the second half as Ruben Dias went close to pulling the side ahead with a volley that deflected wide before McAtee went even closer with a lob minutes later.

That proved to be McAtee's final big involvement as the young English midfielder made way for Jeremy Doku as the hosts looked to get back in the lead.

The change proved to be a masterstroke as Doku skipped past Axel Disasi down the left flank and surged into the box before cross to the far post, where Matheus Nunes was on hand to slot home the winning goal in time added on.
