Al Ahly star equals major Messi-Ronaldo CWC feat

Al Ahly star Hussein El Shahat equalled a feat previously achieved by only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and one other footballer during the Egyptian giants' FIFA Club World Cup win on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils secured a 3-0 win over Auckland City in their opening game of the tournament that is being held in Morocco.

Al Ahly's Hussein El Shahat scored their first goal against the New Zealand side, before Mohamed Sherif doubled the lead and Percy Tau found himself on the scoresheet with a late strike in the 86th minute.

According to FIFA, with his strike in the match, El Shahat has become only the fourth player ever to score in three different Club World Cup tournaments, alongside Messi, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

The attacking midfielder has three goals in three editions of the competition, having scored for Al Ain in the 2018 tournament and for Al Ahly in 2021.

Ronaldo found the back of the net for Manchester United in the 2008 edition, before doing the same with Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017, while Messi scored in the 2009, 2011 and 2015 campaigns with FC Barcelona.

Al Ahly will now play a second-round tie against Major Soccer League side Seattle Sounders on Saturday, after which the winner of that game will lock horns with the UEFA Champions League title holders Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Morocco's Wydad Casablanca will face Al Hilal in the other second-round fixture, and the team who wins that match will face Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo in the semi-finals.
