OFFICIAL: FIFA confirms special privilege for CWC teams

It has been confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns and the other giants participating at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will receive a special privilege.

Reports last week had suggested that concerns surrounding the showpiece were growing, with one of them being that the tournament will take place between 15 June and 13 July, a period in which the transfer window will be open.

With the competition kicking off before the window opens in July, FIFA have now provided a solution that involves giving the 32 participating sides a special leeway for transfers.

World football's governing body has revealed in a statement that these teams will have the option of opening an exceptional registration window from 1 to 10 June 2025.

The federation also stated that the decision as to whether or not to open an additional window remains at the full discretion of each FIFA Member Association concerned.

"Following the deadline for the submission of the squad lists, as some players' contracts will expire mid-competition, participating clubs may replace players during a restricted in-competition period from 27 June to 3 July 2025 within a set limit and according to specific limitations," the organisation stated.

"However, the objective is to encourage clubs and players whose contracts are expiring to find an appropriate solution to facilitate the players' participation."

Meanwhile, FIFA president Gianni Infantino also explained some of the reasoning behind the decision.

"These regulations will ensure that the best possible conditions are in place in order for all 32 participating clubs and the best players in the world to shine at the highest level," he said.

With the competition set to be hosted in the United States, concerns about the lack of venues had been raised, but those were quelled when the governing body announced the 12 stadiums at which matches will be played.

However, it still faces the issues of the UEFA European U21 Championship taking place from 12 June to 5 July, as well as the Concacaf Gold Cup being scheduled to take place between 14 June and 7 July.

Players at the highest level have also brought the stacked fixture calendar into the spotlight, with many of the game's top stars now having to play more matches in a single season than ever before.
