Trophée des Champions match report Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique Marseille

Neymar Junior, who picked up a injury before Christmas last year, started on the bench for PSG who went with Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappe up top.

Icardi went close to bring a bit of spark in attack on 18 minutes when he spotted an opening in the six-yard area to head an inch-perfect corner-kick wide of Steve Mandanda's goal.

Marseille were behind right on the half-hour mark after Mbappe fired in a long ball over the defence, but it was brought back for offside.

There was no stopping the host taking the lead nine minutes later as Mandanda parried a header from Icardi back into the striker's path who gladly executed from close-range.

A change between the sticks for Marseille at the start of the second half resulted in the removal of Mandanda and introduction of Yohann Pele.

PSG battled to hold their own as the match hanged in the balance midway in the second half with Neymar hauled on the field in place of Angel Di Maria.

The Brazilian capped his return in style when he stepped up from the penalty spot to get the better of Pele after Icardi went down in the area following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

A late surge appeared on the cards from Marseille when Dimitri Payet attacked a square pass from Florian Thauvin on 89 minutes to fire across Keylor Navas, but there was no comeback as PSG held on to claim claim the first trophy of the season.
