Man Utd legends slams Ten Hag's 'empty' team

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed the club's midfield options ahead of the Community Shield against rivals Manchester City.

The Manchester rivals will open the domestic season at Wembley Stadium in a rematch of last season's FA Cup final, which United won 2-1.

The Red Devils have signed defender Lenny Yoro and striker Jonathan Zirkzee but are yet to bolster the midfield department, although they have been linked with a number of midfielders.

Scholes has expressed his concern about Erik ten Hag's midfield and goalkeeper Andre Onana ahead of the new campaign.

"I've heard a lot of United fans saying they're excited for the new season, but I'm struggling to get excited," the United legend told the Overlap.

"The middle of the pitch being an area where we're just f*cking empty. Teams just breaking through us."

"I still worry about the goalkeeper, he's a big concern for me. Even watching the pre-season games, a couple of goals he conceded against Liverpool... I worry to death about him."

Scholes added that Ten Hag has to get off to a good start in the Premier League after finishing eighth last campaign.

"I'm concerned for him. He has to get off to a good start. It has to be so much better than last season," he added.

"When they stuck with him I was quite happy because I do like the thought of continuity, we've been through so many managers now it's just ridiculous. But on the other hand, from the first season to the second season you like to see a bit of improvement. But if anything it got worse."
