Man Utd 'reach agreement' for Ten Hag successor

Manchester United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with a new manager after sacking Erik ten Hag.

On Monday, the Red Devils severed ties with Ten Hag following a poor start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, which saw the side lose four of their opening nine matches.

With his tenure having begun in April 2022, the Dutchman would go on to win the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup earlier this year, but things at the club began to drastically sour last season, with United being dumped out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stages and recording their worst-ever finish in the Premier League, ending the campaign in eighth place.

Despite being given a new contract in July this year until June 2026 after an extensive end-of-season review, Ten Hag has been shown the door just four months later, leaving the Old Trafford helm vacant.

However, less than 24 hours since the announcement that he has been dismissed, it is now reported that United have now found a replacement.

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, United have a verbal agreement with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim to become Ten Hag's successor.

It is said the Premier League giants are willing to pay the Portuguese tactician's release clause, which reportedly stands at £8.3 million (R190 million).

Further reports indicate that Amorim was sounded out by members of the United hierarchy last week already, with INEOS chief Sir Dave Brailsford said to have recently met the manager with the hope completing the appointment soon.

Amorim will reportedly expect to receive a big pay rise from his current salary of £2.15 million (R49.3 million) a year, with talkSPORT claiming that the 39-year-old was asking for £7 million (R160 million) a year from West Ham United during the off-season before those talks eventually collapsed.

It is said it is unlikely he would demand a lower fee from the executives at the Theatre of Dreams, but it is now up to the the two clubs to come to an agreement on his departure from Sporting.
