Man Utd edge 9-goal thriller in Europa League

Manchester United advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League following a thrilling 5-4 win over Olympique Lyon on Thursday night.

The Red Devils went with the exact same line-up from the 2-2 draw in the first last week, as Andre Onana was back in the side after being rested against Newcastle United over the weekend.

United got the start they were looking for when Manuel Ugarte opened the scoring on 10 minutes by turning home a cross from Alejandro Garnacho.

Lyon almost got back on level terms after the 30-minute mark via an individual effort from Rayan Cherki, who skipped past a few challenges but was unable to fire past Onana, who pulled off a good save.

The home side got the cushion goal just before the halftime break, as Harry Maguire's long-pass found the run of Diogo Dalot who got the better of Nicolás Tagliafico and fired into the far corner.

The second half got off to a lively start as Garnacho passed up golden one-on-one chance to extend United's lead on 50 minutes, while Onana produced a good reflex save to keep out Corentin Tolisso's snap-shot.

The visitors gave themselves some hope with 20 minutes left on the clock as Alexandre Lacazette headed the ball back into the six-yard area, where Tolisso was on hand to head past a helpless Onana.

It was all square on 77 minutes when Tagliafico snuck in at the far post to turn home after Ainsley Maitland-Niles fired the ball back into the danger area.

Lyon did finish the game with ten players after Tolisso was given his marching orders in second-half stoppage time after picking up his second yellow card, as the clash moved to extra-time.

The visitors, however, went ahead in the in the 104th minute as Malick Fofana embarked on a fine run before the ball fell kindly to Cherki, who rattled the bottom corner with a powerful strike.

Lyon got the two-goal cushion with ten minutes left on the clock as Lacazette converted a penalty after Luke Shaw had fouled the lively Fofana in the box.

However, the comeback started when United got a penalty of their own four minutes later as Fernandes calmly converted and reduced the deficit.

The Red Devils went on to secure a remarkable comeback as Kobbie Mainoo restored parity on 120 minutes with a lovely finish in the box before Harry Maguire grabbed the winning goal late on with a towering header to send United to the semi-finals.
