Double treble winner dares Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates defender and captain Lucky Lekgwathi has given the Soweto giants a piece of advice ahead of their clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates will have a rare chance to close the gap on leaders Sundowns to just three points, with a game in hand, should they get maximum points.

However, the home side will stretch their lead over their opponents on Saturday, who have a game in hand, to nine points, with a win at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The titanic encounter could therefore already be billed a title decider only halfway through the season.

Lekgwathi opened up on whether the game is a title decider, speaking exclusively to KickOff.com.

"Not yet. You can lose to a team that is on top of you, whatever, but for me, I think Pirates should not allow that, to lose to Mamelodi Sundowns," said the man who also featured for Ria Stars.

"Because if Sundowns win, they are going to open a big gap. For Pirates, a 'lose' must be a draw so they can close the gap.

"If you want to win the league, you can't allow the team that is on top of you to lead you with too many points because it's very difficult to play catch-up, especially competing against a team like Sundowns," insisted Lekgwathi.

Sundowns have won the league title for the past seven seasons and 'Phinda Mzala' also suggested that with the Premiership now under a new sponsor, it should be a motivation to his former side's charges to end the dominance.

"They (Sundowns) have the experience of winning the league, they won DStv (under previous sponsor), I don't know how many times, they are the only ones who won it under DStv.

"But this is Betway Premiership now, Pirates should want to make history by being being the first team to win Betway Premiership."

Kick-off is at 15:30.
