Guardiola in shock 'talks' over national team job

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is now reportedly in talks over potentially taking charge of one of Europe's top national teams.

The Spanish manager is currently sidelined after undergoing back surgery in Barcelona last week.

His continental treble success in the 2022/23 campaign ensured that he finally got over the hurdle of not winning the UEFA Champions League since leaving FC Barcelona in 2012, a failure many of his critics had used as a stick to beat him with.

Having also guided the Citizens to their first UEFA Super Cup appearance, as well as a place at the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the Catalan boss has now achieved almost everything there is to achieve as a manager, and there has been growing speculation that the next chapter for him is international football.

According to Bar Canaletes, Guardiola is now in talks with the England national team over possibly replacing Gareth Southgate in 2025.

It is further claimed the City tactician had previously offered himself up for the Three Lions job back in 2012, but the English FA opted for now-Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson at the time.

In theory, Guardiola would step into the role after June 2025, when his tenure at the Etihad is scheduled to come to an end, and this would give him a year to prepare the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

It should be further noted that this is reportedly an idea that both parties are currently exploring, rather than a set plan that is already in motion.
