Thiago 'receives' shock approach just days after retiring

Following the recent announcement of his retirement from professional football, former Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara has reportedly received a shock approach from one of the European giants.

On Monday, the Spaniard announced that he is hanging up his boots following an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign, which saw him play just five minutes of football all season long.

The decision comes after four seasons at Liverpool, where he was allowed to leave as a free agent on 30 June due to his contract coming to an end.

"I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed it," he said in a social media post confirming the decision to retire.

"Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way. See you soon."

However, reports emerging less than 24 hours after his announcement now suggest that he is now the subject of interest from one of his former clubs.

According to Spanish journalist Toni Juanmarti, FC Barcelona's new coach Hansi Flick wants Thiago to return to Camp Nou as part of his coaching staff following his appointment as Xavi Hernandez's successor at the helm.

Flick knows Thiago very well, as the two of them have previously worked together at Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season.

The report adds that the retired playmaker is leaning towards accepting the offer, as he hope to become a coach someday.

Flick is said to be in contact with the 33-year-old and if they reach an agreement, the matter will be presented to Barca bosses.

If the former midfielder gives the go-ahead, then the matter will need to be discussed with Barca bosses.
