Martial finds new club at last after Man Utd exit?

A European club is now reportedly closing in on a deal to sign former Manchester United star Anthony Martial as a free agent.

The French forward has been without a club since parting ways with United at the end of June, closing the curtain on a nine-year association with the Manchester club.

Since then, he's been linked with numerous clubs, including Lille, Atalanta, Olympique Marseille, Besiktas and, most recently, Flamengo in Brazil.

However, the 28-year-old now looks set to join AEK Athens in Greece on a three-year contract, according to SPORT24.

It is claimed Martial was initially close to moving to Brazil, but the proposed deal with Flamengo collapsed due to the attacker's insistence on a longer contract than that offered.

It is understood the player has already verbally agreed to join the Greek club, and that final documents are now being exchanged.

Moreover, Martial is said to be in line to earn £2.5 million (R58.2 million) a season with AEK, with the contract amounting to £7.5 million (R174 million) in total, including bonuses.

As such, it is reported that this would be the biggest salary in AEK's history.

Currently, though, recent signing and former Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela is believed to be the highest earner at the club with his reported annual wages of £1.7 million (R39.6 million) a year.

Although the Athens team have reportedly agreed to break the bank for Martial, his earnings have taken a sizeable drop compared to the reported £250 000 (R5.8 million) a week he was pocketing in Manchester.

Meanwhile, AEK were close to signing Ivorian striker David Datro Fofana from Chelsea on loan over the past week, but that move failed, with the player having since joined Turkish side Goztepe instead.
